Cubs Get Their Fan

CHICAGO, May 28 (AP)- Ronnie (Woo-Woo!) Wickers said tonight that he is just like his beloved Chicago Cubs: alive and well.

After 17 years of not missing a Cubs home game, Wickers- a 45 year-old street person who held only odd jobs-hadn’t been seen through 21 games this season.

It was hard not to notice Wickers because of his relentless chanting from the bleachers, which usually went like this: “Cubs, Woo! Sandberg, Woo! Davis, Woo! Cubs, Woo! Woo, Woo!”

Wicker’s absence prompted speculation that he left town, was banned from the ballpark, or even that he may have died. But Wickers, spurred by stories of his being missing, contacted news organizations to say he had been working regularly in a pizza parlor when the Cubs played.

“It’s nice to know people are concerned,” he said in a telephone interview.

Peggy Gelsomino, manager of Gin’s North, said public concern about Wickers has prompted her to change his work schedule so he can attend games.

“Don’t worry, I’ll be out there Monday,” Wickers said. “I won’t miss another game all season.”
